BLIP festival wrap up

The squarewave ring in my ears finally faded, here´s a round up of the coverage from the Blip Festival 2006 in NYC - MAKE was a sponsor and had a table there with our kits and zines. The fest consisted of a small but growing community from around the world - there´s something delightful about artists, composers and makers creating music from tossed gaming machines that are almost as old as the performers.

The folks there liked the year one MAKE (soldering primer) the MIDI & circuit bending issues and the Mintyboost for charging Gameboys and music players - thanks to all the folks who stopped by to say hi, chat and pick up MAKE stuff.

Turn your DS into a MIDI keyboard
You might think the Nintendo DS is a kiddy console, but that notion is thrown out of the window with the introduction of the DSMIDIWiFi, turning your fun loving DS´ touch screen into a controller that sends wireless signals to a host program on your computer, making the melody in your head a reality. The DS MIDI Keyboard program turns your DS into a virtual MIDI keyboard along with pitch wheel/MIDI control adjustment while the Kaos DS is an XY controller that works just like a Kaoss pad. Last but not least, the Pulse DS will utilize the handheld console´s Programmable Sound Generator to produce synthesized MIDI tunes. You could say the DSMIDIWiFi is one of the best homebrew applications to come out in a long time.

6-pack - Arduino-based controller for live audio/video performances

Here´s an arduino-based controller for live audio/video performances. Cheap to build and amazingly small...
"6-pack is an open-ended, highly customisable, and ultra-portable physical controller based on the Arduino board. 6-pack is an Arduino shield consisting of 6 linear potentiometer sliders that can be assigned to different variables in the user´s preferred software. It can be used to control a wide array of audio/video applications, from software synthesizers to HDJ systems. All, with a minimal footprint (3,5" x 2,5") and on the cheap (just a fraction of the cost of an equivalent MIDI interface). The project is open source. Schematics and source code included."
